  3. SCSIInfo is a Control Panel document which provides a comprehensive table
  4. of information about each SCSI device attatched to your computer.
  5. SCSIInfo works consistantly with System Software versions 6.03 - 7.0.0.
  6. In addition to the standard Reset, Scan, and Mount functions, SCSI info provides
  7. SCSI info can be used to diagnose various problems you may be having with your 
  8. hard disks. Pay particular attention to the descriptions below of each data field.

  10. Vendor:                   Who made it?
  11. Model:                       What did they call it?
  12. Version:                What is the firmware version?
  13. SCSI ID:                   This is the address of the device this information pertains to.
  14. Sectors:                  Total number of sectors for the entire device.
  15. Capacity:               How many Kbytes of information this device can store.
  16. Cylinders:            How many data cylinders does this device contain?
  17. Free Space:        Total unused space on this device in Kbytes. Note that in some cases
  18.                                             value indicates only the free space of the 1st partition.
  19. Initialized:         When this device was last initialized.
  20. Backed up:              When this device was last backed up. This value will say "Never!!" if
  21.                                               you have not backed up since the disk was initialized. Also note that
  22.                                               some backup programs do not properly set the backup flag in the
  23.                                                   Volume Information Block. In this case, SCSIInfo will report "Never!!".
  24. Interleave:             The interleave under which this device was formatted.
  25. Bytes/Sector:        This will generally read 512 under the Macintosh operating system.
  26. Heads:                                The number of read/write heads this device uses.
  27. Boot Version:         Apple's version of the Boot Blocks currently installed on this disk.
  28.                                                     '0' indicates this to be a non-bootable disk. This information is
  29.                                                     irrespective of any System software which may be installed. If you
  30.                                                     have a disk which contains a System Folder, but has a Boot Version of
  31.                                                   '0', you will still be unable to boot from that disk. Conversly a disk
  32.                                                   with valid Boot Blocks will not boot if there is no System Folder
  33.                                                   installed.
  34.                                                     As you may have guessed, the boot version IS specific to
  35.                                                   the System version. Thus you should ALWAYS use Apple's Installer
  36.                                                   to install System software. NEVER copy a System Folder. The Installer
  37.                                                   automatically writes the appropriate Boot Blocks at install time.
  38. Factory Defects: This is a list of how many bad blocks were locked out during the
  39.                                                      Original factory Format. These bad blocks are due to imperfections
  40.                                                      in the surface of the disk and data will never be written to them.
  41. User Defects:            This is the total number of bad blocks encountered on subsequent
  42.                                                      formats. These defects are largely due to the drive geometry 
  43.                                                      changing as the drive ages. As with Factory Defects, these blocks
  44.                                                      have been locked out from use, and data will not be written to them.
  45. System Version:  This is the System version under which you are currently operating.
  46. Drive Icon:                     The SCSIInfo Icon will change to the drive's icon when a device is
  47.                                                         selected.
  48. Drive Name:                    Right after the Icon, The name of the 1st volume at the current
  49.                                                         selected SCSI address will be displayed.

  52. In addition to the standrd table of information, there is a message area located
  53. just above the Scan button. Errors will be reported here as well as other bits
  54. of information as appropriate.

  56. The Buttons:
  57.  
  58. 0 - 6 represent the SCSI addresses. The buttons which are highlighted indicate
  59. at which addresses a device was located. Pressing on a located device will display
  60. the table of information as described above.

  62. Scan will search the SCSI bus for devices and set buttons 0-6 as appropriated.
  63. This is useful if a device has come online after you have run SCSIInfo.
  64.  
  65. Mount will place the icon on the Desktop for all volumes which have a driver in
  66. memory. Note, that this process will bypass many password protection schemes,
  67. used by some partitioning software. So Use With Care!
  68.  
  69. Reset will reset the SCSI bus, in case there is an arbitration problem.
  70.  
  71. The fine-print:
  72. SCSIInfo represents many hours of hard work. It is being released as shareware.
